The City of Shiroishi was established on the 1st April 1954. This was the first major area merger and the following districts amalgamated under one council: Shiroishi, Kosugo, Saikawa, Odaira, Shirakawa, Otazawa and Fukuoka. In 1957, the Hot Spring village of Obara joined to make what is now the City of Shiroishi.

Presently in Shiroishi there are several 114 resident associations working in cooperation to make Shiroishi ‘the best hometown in Japan’. These groups are in frequent communication with each other and act as a communication bridge between the city government and citizens to discuss issues concerning the local community.

The resident association groups welcome all new residents to become members and join in to help relay information about community events and services. To become a member please contact the Office of General Affairs at City Hall at 25-2111 extension # 337.
