History of Shiroishi

In 1602, a vassal of Masamune Date, Kojuro Katakura, was made lord of Shiroishi Castle and was given administrative control over the city of Shiroishi and its surrounding areas. Lord Katakura was responsible for many changes that occurred. During his reign, he implemented various local improvement projects including the redesigning and expanding of the town road system, the zoning of neighborhoods and the construction of sewage and water canals.

In 1889, the former domain of Lord Katakura which included the town of Shiroishi and the 10 other villages was incorporated as Katta District. The local government that was established for the county at the time is regarded as one of the first important steps towards a democratic government of Shiroishi.

In April 1954, the town of Shiroishi and six of the ten surrounding villages merged to form the city of Shiroishi. Three years later in 1957, a second merger took place with the hot spring village of Obara establishing the present-day city of Shiroishi.
