Shiroishi is located on the lowlands with a backdrop provided by the magnificent
snow capped Zao Mountains which include amongst their peaks, a dormant
volcano. The city is zig-zagged with canals fed from the Shiroishi River
and its history dates back to the sixteenth century when it originated
as a castle fortress town.
The City of Shiroishi in Miyagi Prefecture lies about 300km north of Tokyo
on the eastern side of the mainland Japan. With a population of 38,300,
Shiroishi is largely a rural community but is situated close to the Tohoku
Capital and capital of Miyagi Prefecture, Sendai. Sendai City is easily
accessible from Shiroishi by high speed transport provided by the famous
shinkansen (bullet train, 15 minutes) and the recently completed Tohoku
Expressway (30 minutes). Seaport facilities for the area are provided at
nearby Shiogama.
The word Shiroishi means ‘White Rock’. According to the local legend, the city was named
after a sacred white rock which was worshipped as a deity for several hundred
years. |
